Turns out that Alaska is melting. #

...

Cool! Someone with way too much free time has elucidated the basic principles of movie physics, complete with a bunch of movie reviews. The PGP-13 rating means, Children under 13 might be tricked into thinking the physics were pretty good; parental guidance is suggested. This site wins a lot of points for agreeing with me about the stupidity of "Outerspace Explosions":

Star Trek originally got it right. In early episodes, when something exploded in outerspace, it made no sound. That's because there is no air in outerspace to transmit sound.

Well, duh! The Star Wars movies have the same problem, but worse:

  1. Computer animation results in video with no soundtrack, which means that zillions of dollars must be spent dubbing in noises that have no business being there anyway. (Did anyone else notice that the noises in Episode II seemed like they were there more to demonstrate the loud digital sound than to suggest "actual" sound?)
  2. Stanley Kubrick made 2001 about a decade earlier and managed to get the silence correct.
Only the eyes of the completely humorless will glaze over while reading about movie physics. #
